Engineering More Reliable Non-Metallic Pipeline Systems Through Lifecycle Thinking

ABSTRACT
The presentation will explore the key challenges affecting rigid and flexible non-metallic pipeline systems and how lifecycle thinking can help address them. I will cover areas including design and qualification limitations, joint performance and failure examples, material ageing, and the distinction between conventional factors of safety and reliability-based approaches.
About the speaker
Dr. Sadik Omairey is a Chartered Engineer (CEng), Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (FIMechE) and Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA). He specialises in non-metallic materials and composite technologies, with extensive experience in research and development, materials assessment, technology qualification and industrial deployment across the energy sector.
He holds a PhD in Mechanical Engineering specialising in composite materials and is currently a Senior Research Fellow at the Brunel Composites Centre, where he leads industry-focused programmes in advanced composites, structural performance and sustainable materials.
Previously, Dr Omairey managed multidisciplinary research and development programmes within an international, operator-supported non-metallic technology initiative. His work involved collaborating with energy operators, manufacturers and research organisations to evaluate materials, qualify emerging technologies and support their deployment in industrial applications. He also co-developed and delivered specialist training at the ADNOC Research and Innovation Centre on reinforced thermoset resin and flexible composite pipe technologies for ADNOC’s non-metallic subject-matter experts.
Dr Omairey is also the Founder of the Non-Metallic Engineers Exchange (NmeX), an international professional platform established to advance technical knowledge, collaboration and capability development within the non-metallic materials sector. Through this initiative, he engages with operators, manufacturers, engineering organisations, research institutions and technology developers to facilitate knowledge exchange and support the safe, effective and sustainable adoption of non-metallic technologies.
