ABSTRACT

This talk presents recent developments in in-situ non-destructive testing of composite structures using ultrasonic guided waves. It introduces the fundamentals of UGW-based inspection and discusses their application to both composite laminates and adhesive bondlines. The presentation focuses on field-deployable and wireless inspection systems that enable rapid, on-location assessment in operational environments. Through practical examples, it illustrates how advanced UGW techniques can be translated into scalable and cost-effective solutions for structural health monitoring, supporting improved safety, reduced downtime, and more efficient maintenance of composite structures.

About the speaker

Maarten Adams is the Founder and CEO of SINTEG Systems, a TU Delft spin-off based in Delft, The Netherlands, developing portable sensor systems for the inspection and monitoring of composite structures. With a background in maritime engineering and a specialization in acoustic emission and ultrasonics, his work focuses on translating non-destructive testing technologies into practical, field-deployable solutions. With SINTEG Systems, he delivers scalable and cost-effective inspection methods that improve the safety and reliability of composite structures across aviation, maritime, defense, and other demanding sectors. The company is part of the NATO DIANA accelerator program and supports the transition toward lighter and more sustainable engineered systems.
